Emanuel Synagogue

Youth Educator

Come work in our team! We’re looking for youth educators to join us in running our Kef Kids and Yesod programs, for students in the Sydney Jewish community in primary and early high school. These programs cater to students who don’t attend Jewish Day Schools, and helps them become knowledgeable, confident and well-connected young Jews with strong identities. It’s a great chance for you to develop hands-on educational and broader professional skills, and we encourage creative approaches in developing the Jewish values and literacy of our students. It’s a perfect role for young people in tertiary education or similar, and for those in youth movements – though neither are essential.

We also invest in you, our educators. We know that our team is young, at the start of their professional lives, and we want to equip you with skills to help you in your roles with us and in your future. We offer frequent reflection, feedback and debriefing, and regular professional development sessions to expand your thinking and skillset as educators. You’ll also receive direct support from our Youth Rabbi and Head of Youth Education.

Emanuel Synagogue is the largest synagogue in Australia, and one of the fastest-growing. Come work with us, and be a part of an expanding network of Jewish youth education programs.

Responsibilities and duties

You will be responsible for writing programs (on topics from the provided syllabus) which will be creative and dynamic in their approaches. You will also be responsible for running programs for a group of students on Thursday afternoons during school term from 4:00-5:30 pm. A typical weekly shift will run 2:15-5:45 pm.

During school holidays, you will work with other Youth Educators and the Head of Youth Education to create plans and content for the upcoming term. You will also participate in 1-2 training days during school holidays each year to develop your educational skills and Jewish literacy. Furthermore, after each term you will write reports for students. You will be paid for all of these additional commitments.

As a Youth Educator, you will report to Donny Janks (Head of Youth Education) and Rabbi Rafi Kaiserblueth (Youth Rabbi).
