Early Literacy Support Project

The Social Justice Committee’s Early Literacy Support Project has been supporting disadvantaged schools since 2015. Unfortunately, we’ve had to pause due to COVID.  We have been invited to return to the schools.

Volunteers support young students with reading and other literacy activities for a minimum of an hour weekly during term time.  The schools are all within reasonable driving distance from the eastern suburbs and are also accessible by public transport.

No teaching expertise is required; training and ongoing support is provided.

The teachers greatly appreciate the input, students benefit, and our volunteers feel that they receive far more than they give.

Anyone interested in finding out more about this valuable project, please contact Nehama at the following email address: socialjustice@emanuel.org.au

Our courses support young students across topics and we’ll soon need volunteers in the following areas:

Literacy Support

Volunteers work in the classroom, listening to individual students read or supervise a small group literacy activity. Morning session, weekly; training provided.

Male to facilitate a book club for advanced boys

These students need a male role model who enjoys reading. The session would involve reading a chosen book, discussion and possibly some activities. Afternoon session, weekly or fortnightly; teacher will supervise; support provided.

Activity facilitator

An enthusiastic, curious person required, who enjoys one of the following activities: gardening, constructing things or pulling objects apart to see how they work. This person would facilitate such activities with a small group of students. Lunchtime session, weekly; teacher will supervise.

Mathematics facilitator

A person with an interest and expertise in problem solving required to guide a small group of young mathematicians who crave mathematical challenges. Weekly sessions, teacher will supervise; guidance provided.

If you feel you’d be a good fit for any of the above roles, please register your interest by emailing socialjustice@emanuel.org.au.
