Social Justice
One of the foundations of Judaism and our synagogue is Tikun Olam, the imperative upon us to heal the world and be active participants in bringing justice and healing to those around us and our planet. Our synagogue has a very active social justice committee which has a number of on-going programmes reaching out and helping in our community. We would love to have you join us in any of our programmes. We are also open to new ideas and initiatives and would love to hear from you if you have any ideas. To be in touch send an email to socialjustice@emanuel.org.au
Annual Events
Mitzvah Day
Our congregation has been participating in world-wide mitzvah day for many years. This year Mitzvah day is on November 22nd . Stay tuned for our exciting events and activities for that day.
Festival Programmes and giving
We connect every festival celebration for our community with reaching out to give to others, so they too can share in the joy of our holidays. Each festival has its own unique social justice initiative. To find out more or to offer suggestions for projects contact socialjustice@emanuel.org.au
Collections
Our congregation has a number of on-going collections and often engage in one-off initiatives. At the moment we have the following opportunities for giving:
Bread Tags for Wheelchairs
We collect the bread tags and send them to “Bread Tags for Wheelchairs” in South Africa and in Australia. They then use the donations to acquire wheelchairs for people in need. For more information click here.
Gunnawirra
Gunnawirra is an organisation which assists remote Indigenous communities. We are currently collecting specific school supplies for them to distribute to children. For a list of items for the packs or to find out more about Gunnawirra, please click this link.
Educational Forums
The Social Justice team also provides educational forums and lectures about social justice issues in our community, helping us to learn and understand the complex issues facing us as Jews and as humans.
New Ideas and Involvement
We are always open to new ideas and ways of doing the vital work of tikun olam and would love to hear any initiatives from our community.
We also would love new volunteers to join us for once-off events, periodic volunteering in our programmes or any support you would like to offer to our social justice work. If you are interested in being involved, just email the chair of the committee, Michael Folk on socialjustice@emanuel.org.au and we will help connect you with the programme or event which is right for you.
